Oversized Fun

For decades, the Air and Space Museum on the National Mall in Washington, DC, has had to store its thousands of artifacts that were too large or too numerous to display. In the 1990s, Steven Udvar-Hazy, a philanthropist, donated $65 million to the Smithsonian. The Center built in his name is a 760,000-square-foot hangar and displays incredible pieces of aviation and space exploration history, including an SR-71 Blackbird, rockets, and missiles.

Udvar-Hazy in the Movies

Here’s a fun fact: the Udvar-Hazy Center was used as a setting in the 2009 blockbuster hit Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. In the movie, the SR-71 Blackbird has a starring role as an ancient Transformer Decepticon-turned-Autobot named Jetfire.
